March 14, 2024 Monthly Meeting

We started the 2024 Pittsville Area Historical Society year with the March monthly meeting on March 14. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Jan Patrick. The Secretary’s report was presented by Mary Czaja. There was no Treasurer’s report.

Old Business included a report about Book 9 of the Stories of Our Lives series. It is at the printers. It includes a history of the Cranberry Marshes in the area and Shirley & Burt Iverson’s story. The books will cost $10.00 and can be found at the museum and Paulie’s Diner.

The museum has received many scrapbooks over the years. One of the projects in the winter is to index each to make it easier to help when people come in looking for information about an ancestor.

Marlene Neve reported on a presentation that she, Chris Buchanan and Randy Fochs gave at the Lunch and Learn program at the library. There were approximately 30 people in attendance. It went over very well.

New Business began with a report that the Annual Meeting will be on April 11. There will be an election of new officers for the year. All Historical Society members and the general public are invited to attend. The meeting will be held downstairs in the museum at 1:00. The April monthly meeting will be held after. This might be a good time to see what the organization does and if you would like to join. Individual membership dues are $10.00, Family-$15.00 and Business-$50.00.

Chris Nepper worked on the Website over the winter. He did a fantastic job. Check pittsvilleareahistoricalsociety.org to see the new look. There is also an email account, info@pittsvilleareahistoricalsociety.org. The site has access to items that are for sale, past yearbooks and an overview of what is displayed in each building. You will be amazed at how it looks.

Scranton School will be open on May 13, 15, 17, 20, 23, 28 & 30. The day gives students an idea of what it was like to go to a small rural school in he 1930’s and 40’s. They change into period clothing, get an identity for the day, learn to put up and take down the flag. During the morning, the students read in a group in the front of the school room while the others work quietly at their desks. After noon recess, they form three groups to experience reading by lamplight, cursive writing with pen and ink and math with an abacus and chalk board to do their work-no pencils and paper. The volunteers look forward to this each year.

We will be holding a Brat Fry Fundraiser on May 31 and will be helping the library with an Adventure in the Park program in July.
